It is important to secure your pet in your car when traveling. There are good restraints that use your vehicle's lower anchor and tethers for latch systems. A harness can be used to connect to your vehicle's seat belt. A smaller dog should travel in a carrier that can be restrained in the car. This will prevent your pet from launching off of the seat in case of an accident.
If you decide to use a crate, your pet should fit snug but comfortably inside. If the crate is too big, your pet could become seriously injured in case of a sudden stop. Your pet should be able to stand up and turn around comfortably. Crates can be secured inside your car with cargo area anchor straps.
