Just 2 gallons of oil can create enough
electricity
to:
- Power a home for 1
day.
- Cook 48 meals in a
microwave.
- Blow dry a person's hair at least 216
times.
- Watch
TV for 7.5 days straight!! That's 180
hours!!
Oil Filters
Fact: Recycling 1 ton of oil filters yields 1700 pounds
of steel, 30 gallons of motor oil, and saves 10 cubic yards of land fill
space!
What
exactly is an oil filter made of? An oil filter consist of 3 basic items,
paper, steel, and plastic, which all can be broken down and recycled. A
properly drained oil filter can contain up to 1/2 a cup of motor oil, which
could pollute up to 31,250 gallons of water!
Automobile Batteries
Fact: About 60 percent of the
world's lead comes from car batteries!
Never throw a
battery in the trash! Automotive batteries contain high amounts of lead which
are highly toxic. Sulfuric acid electrolyte, a highly corrosive poison that
produces flammable and toxic gases that can explode, is contained deep within
these batteries. New lead-acid batteries are now composed of 60-80 percent
recycled lead and plastic!
Engine Coolant
Fact: As antifreeze biodegrades
in water, it lowers the level of dissolved oxygen and kills aquatic
like!
Waste antifreeze may
contain heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and chromium in high enough levels
to make it a regulated waste. A hazardous waste may never be dumped on land or
discharged into a sanitary sewer, storm drain, ditch, dry well, or septic
system.
****Antifreeze has a sweet taste to it, which makes
it enticing and potentially deadly to animals and
children.****
It is estimated that only
12% of all waste antifreeze in the US is actually recycled, where is the rest
going?
Tires
Fact: Tires stockpiles are
breeding grounds for vermin. Tires collect large pools of water, which create
the perfect atmosphere for mosquitoes, which carry diseases like encephalitis,
dengue fever, and
Tires are viewed as one of
the most problematic sources of waste! It is estimated that around 9% of tires
are disposed of properly. Due to the durability of tires, they do not break
down easily. Their durability is also a plus because it makes it even easier to
reuse and recycle them.
We do
charge a $3 disposal fee per tire.
